Dogs have the sensory acuity of smell is excellent. This animal’s excess is now used for medical purposes, because dogs are also capable of detecting prostate cancer through patient urine samples.
Several previous studies also concluded that dogs can detect a number of diseases, including diabetes. But in cancer, this finding is important because many cases of cancer detected too late so it is difficult to treat.
A French researcher, Jean Nicolas Cutaneous, successfully conducted experiments with dogs. This intelligent animal known it was able to distinguish the odor in question. Dogs are able to recognize odor molecules produced by cancer cells.
In one experiment, researchers trained Belgian Malinois dog, the kind that is also used to track bombs and drugs. The dog is accustomed to smell the urine samples of prostate cancer patients and compare them with some healthy human urine samples.
At the end of the study, researchers gave urine samples at random to be recognized by the dog. As a result, dogs can guess correctly the presence of cancer cells in 63 of 66 samples provided. The next step is to make sure what the actual molecule smelled by dogs in the urine samples of prostate cancer patients.
Thus, dogs are very useful to detect this type of disease. But to hire a dog in the hospital appeared to be less attractive because the cost is quite large, especially for training. (Source: Rumah Tangga dan Kesehatan)
